Successful National Contest for Emerging Poets Returns for Second Year on April 1, for National Poetry Month

“Poetry,” said English poet Thomas Gray, “is thoughts that breathe, and words that burn.”
It’s time again to take up your pen, or juice up your laptop, and discover what’s inside you that longs to breathe and burn. The Aspiring Canadian Poets Contest, a unique initiative to encourage and identify this country’s promising new poets, returns for its second year today, April 1, during National Poetry Month.
Poet Shannon Bramer will judge this year’s contest and also mentor the prize-winners. I’m honoured to have been asked back as editorial/media adviser.

“The Writer” magazine 125th anniversary issue names AllysonLatta.ca one of its 16 favourite writing sites
If a certain someone doesn’t take me out to celebrate tonight, there’s going to be trouble.
And I don’t care if Valentine’s Day was just three days ago.

The Writer magazine — the oldest magazine for writers currently being published, and one of the oldest continuously published magazines in the United States — named my website one of “The Writer List: 16 of Our Favorite Writing Blogs and Websites.”
Four veteran contributors were asked to recommend their faves in a cover feature for the magazine’s 125th anniversary issue (March 2012). The article is titled “Websites & Blogs Worth a Writer’s Time.” The Writer contributing editor Stephanie Dickison — a Toronto freelance journalist — wrote:
“Allyson Latta was the first guest on my radio show about writing. She teaches memoir writing and edits award-winning books. Her website, Memoir Writing & More, and blog are rich with resources and inspiration for writers of every age and level. And her extensive one-on-one interviews with authors are not only original and stimulating, but should be compiled into a book. If you want to learn more about writing, I can’t think of a better place.”
I’m crazy-honoured to be sharing space in the list with 15 other dedicated writer- and editor-bloggers. For the rest of the listees, check out the March issue of The Writer, now available by digital subscription.
Thank you, Stephanie Dickison and The Writer.
Now, back to my happy dance!

AllysonLatta.ca wins Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award
Tobin Elliott over at Left to Write has put a little grin on my face by honouring me with an Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award. I met Tobin at the Ontario Writers’ Conference where I was involved in a Roundtable on Self-Publishing. One of my students, Mary McIntyre, who had taken a course from Tobin years ago and thought highly of him, ended up seated beside him at the conference and introduced the two of us. It was easy to see why she’d raved about him. He’s enthusiastic about writing, his own and others’, friendly, and has a wide range of interests.
Tobin kindly wrote: “Besides being a great writer and editor, Allyson’s also just a very nice person (and a closet horror fan, which is aces in my book!). Interviews, guest bloggers, upcoming writing contests … this blog has something for everyone.”

Welcome to the Launch of My Website on Memoir Writing
This champagne is bubbly and quite delicious. Can’t you almost taste it? Even if you can’t, I’m glad you’re here to help me celebrate simply by reading this post.
Welcome to my new home on the Web. If you’ve been a regular visitor to my former abode, the blog for Days Road Writers’ Workshops, you’ll know that my passion is encouraging people to tell their life stories, whether as memoir or life-based fiction. Thank you for your loyalty as this new space was being designed and built, and for looking me up here at this address.
You’ll see right away that this place is more spacious than the old one. And I feel at-home here already—well, now that the boxes are unpacked and things mostly put away. The paint is fresh, and the colours are, I hope, inviting, and I’ve hung some recently acquired art on the walls.
