Also good for "radiant health and a lovely figure" and to cure cirrhosis of the liver, blackheads, and female complaints. And mainly made up of cardamom, peppermint oil and wheat flour. We don't need to be sad they no longer make them - we can make them ourselves!

We had some giggles over this sign when we were visiting York a few years ago. It was located near the house we were renting, so it was a convenient -- but unusual -- landmark and helped us find our way more than once.

I actually didn't know anything about Bile Beans till I decided to post the photo as a WW, and then I looked them up to discover that they have an interesting history -- as does the sign.

Here's something on the sign and its restoration in the 1980s (apparently it was restored again in Fall 2012):

www.ghostsigns.co.uk/2007/06/bile-beans.html

And here's a post about the origin of Bile Beans:

It is quite memorably nasty, the name! I took this photo several years ago while on vacation in northern England, but recently when I decided to use it for Wordless Wednesday I did a bit of research and discovered more about "Bile Beans" ... and the sign itself.

Reveal to come this evening. :)

Gorgeous work, Allyson!

Besides sleek, smooth, glossy, and retro, this photo makes me think *noir*. It's not just the very definite black and white contrasts, but that CANTEEN sign across the way. And the hot dogs sign. Neon. Maybe flickering and buzzing, as if it's not in very good condition. The image is just wonderful. Will you tell us where it was taken?

Hello, I am the child of a family friend of Lynette Dathorne's family in the UK, but have not seen her for years.
I understand that Lynette's memoirs have now been finished and published - please correct me if I have been misinformed. I would be fascinated to get a copy of her monograph; I have started the initial work and some research into my own family history and feel that her work will give me some information I need, as well as giving me some guidance upon my own endeavour.
I would appreciate your telling me how I can get hold of her publication, or putting me in touch with her - feel free to pass on my email address to her.
Many thanks, Muchi

From Tomoko Suzuki-Murakami:

"Ally, this picture is great and beyond my description, but makes me make a phrase in a poetical mood as follows: "Time passes, nothing stays as it was, and the serenity of the harmony with nature lets us focus on the moment now." Thank you.
